Abstract:
|
Academic advisors provide guidance to students through navigating campus climate, advising on course selection and vocational aspirations, and utilizing theories and approaches that attentively fit student needs. However, students from historically marginalized racial backgrounds share instances of discrimination and poor sense of belonging on campuses that lead to their attrition, particularly at large, public, four-year institutions. It may be that academic advisors' personal and professional experiences and beliefs, in addition to their professional practices and meaning making of their interactions with students of marginalized backgrounds, may inhibit them from fostering influential relationships with the students. The purpose of this study was to explore the personal and professional experiences and beliefs, and professional practices of undergraduate academic advisors. However, this paper will present the emotional labor academic advisors face when left without proper training to assist students from historically marginalized racial backgrounds. |
