Abstract:
|
Academic advisors are often the front line professionals in an institution's freshman retention efforts. Academic advisors have the ability to support freshmen through a variety of transition issues. At our institution, the Center for Student Success and First-Year Experience utilizes professional advisors to provide guidance and support to the freshman cohort. In addition to advising responsibilities, all academic advisors are required to teach a first-year experience course. By utilizing a new academic advising model and redesigning our first-year experience course, our freshman retention rates increased over eight percent. We are excited to offer key insights and first-hand perspectives on the roles and responsibilities our academic advisors have as course instructors. |
