Title: The Puzzle of Advising Students with Autism: Putting the Pieces in Place
Lead Presenter: Cameron Langner
Date: October 01, 2018    Time: 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm
Room: N 227 A
Abstract: "Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD for short. The name alone invokes mental images of Rain Man. What about Sheldon Cooper or Shaun Murphy? Temple Grandin? Many of our perceptions of adults with ASD are out of date and completely inaccurate. Young adults with ASD are enrolling in post-secondary institutions at a higher rate than ever before. Of the 50,000 18 year olds in high school, diagnosed with ASD, only one-third are attending college and very few persist through graduation. Where is the disconnect for these students and how much of the responsibility lies within Advising? Together we will adjust best practices to support students with ASD.
