Abstract:
|
"In this session, participants will learn lessons about advising Native American students in higher education. From 2017-2018, a study on Native students' college choice was conducted in North Carolina. Participants from four-year institutions shared their stories of choosing to enroll in higher education and their experiences on campus. During the study, several lessons about academic advising and supporting Native students emerged from the narrative interviews. Participants in this session will hear the Native students' stories and how academic advising impacted Native students' individual academic journeys (positively and negatively). Participants will then learn and discuss strategies to advise and support Native students in their local communities.
