Abstract:
|
The first year of college (particularly the first few months) is a critical period during which students' attitudes, identities, goals, values, beliefs, adjustments, and future successes in higher education are most influenced (Rentz, 1988). Since we recognize and acknowledge that a student's first year in college is crucial, what support services are in place for students who fall into academic probation after their first semester? This is one of the many questions that all higher education should not only ask but work effortlessly to implement that can lead to retention of first year students. This presentation will provide a basis for starting a probation program at your respective institution while providing insight on a program that is now being used at a 4-year STEM institution. |
