Abstract:
|
College students face a world of intense social scrutiny, high expectations, and constant accessibility. For many, life has always included online sharing and communication, often at the expense of person-to-person connections.
This has contributed to anxiety becoming the most common mental health diagnosis amongst college students. Despite this frequency, anxiety continues to be misunderstood on campuses; which can lead to frustration, disengagement, and attrition. Social anxiety, in particular, poses unique challenges for college students.
As advisors develop skills in response to this new generation and challenges, understanding social anxiety and its implications becomes increasingly important. Through a review of the research and sharing of personal experiences, attendees will be given the opportunity to learn more about social anxiety - its causes, symptoms, effects, and how we can help. |
