Conference Year: 2018
Session #: 228(LEC)
Title: Coming to the Table, Keeping It Real: Black Female Advisors in Courageous Dialogue
Lead Presenter: Elia Tamplin
Date: October 02, 2018    Time: 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm
Room: N 226 C
Abstract: Responding to the NACADA 2018 call for proposals, this exploratory interactive session seeks to serve as a space for Black female advisors to tell their stories at the intersections of race/ethnicity, gender, age, sexuality, and advisor identity. After a brief introduction of session objectives and sista circle methodology (Johnson, 2015), participants will be invited to engage in personal reflection and intimate group discussion about their experiences as professionals in the field of academic advising. As Johnson (2015) notes, sista circles provide support in a 'sister to sister' environment. Topics will include challenges and barriers, triumphs and success strategies, survival and coping, approaches to advising, and visions for the future of higher education, and advising in particular.
