Title: The Outsiders: Changing the Sophomore Story Through Major Specific Advising
Lead Presenter: Susan Eisenberg
Date: October 01, 2018    Time: 7:15 am - 8:15 am
Room: N Ballroom 120 A-D
Abstract: The forgotten ones. Lost year. Middle children. Sophomore slump. Do you feel these phrases could describe sophomores at your institution? While colleges and universities often put great emphasis on welcoming freshman and creating engaging and exciting first year programs, students then face a daunting sophomore year with little institutional support. Learn how a transition into a new advising model designed to connect sophomores to their intended major has put the focus on supporting these second year students.

This presentation will outline a plan to empower and engage sophomores using 1) targeted communication; 2) major workshops; 3) faculty involvement; 4) curricular considerations; and 5) advising culture change. Join us to learn how we moved through the initial challenges to create a sophomore major specific advising program.
