Title: What are You Saying?!?- Professionalism, Tech, and Slang
Lead Presenter: Brighton Brooks
Date: October 01, 2018    Time: 10:15 am - 11:15 am
Room: N 231 A/B
Abstract: "Engaging with students 'where they are' becomes increasingly complex as communication technologies and slang evolve at a rapid pace and challenge our notions of professional language. When we advise to teach, are we aware of our biases and assumptions in the very words we use and respond to?

Social construction and symbolic interaction theories can help us examine potential benefits and pitfalls of using slang and textspeak with students. Participants will analyze their own communication style and come away with a better understanding of the informal and formal messages they may be transmitting to students. Developing this awareness can lead to more purposeful interactions with students in person, on the phone, and online. =)
