Title: Bridging the Gap: How Advisors Support Students Who Do Not Attend Orientation
Lead Presenter: Maureen Bell-Werner
Date: October 02, 2018    Time: 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Room: N 225 A/B
Abstract: According to Tinto (1993), the purpose of freshmen orientation is 'bridging the gap to college' (p. 159). A good orientation program provides necessary information, sets expectations for success, and builds institutional connection (Soria, Lingren Clark, & Coffin Koch, 2013). What about students who do not attend orientation? This presentation discusses how first-year students who do not attend orientation or attend a shortened orientation compare in high school preparation and collegiate academic success with orientation attendees. Further, this presentation explores why first-year students do not attend orientation and changes made to a shortened orientation to better support student success. Audience participation is essential to explore how academic advisors can encourage and empower this at risk population to impact retention and student success.
