Abstract:
|
To hear and understand a student's life story, academic advisors need the counseling skills necessary to draw out the information that is left unsaid. Academic advisors will use counseling skills at some point in their career whether they are aware of it or not. Being able to put a name to those skills and better understand how to utilize them can help them in their practice. Using counseling skills to develop an authentic relationship with their advisees can help with increased academic satisfaction and persistence. Presenters will address different techniques such as active listening, reframing, paraphrasing vs. parroting, and more. Through this presentation attendees will 1) learn about a variety of counseling tools, 2) be able to put them into practice through role play, and 3) brainstorm on ways to help students learn these skills. |
