Abstract:
|
"Graduate students face unique and difficult challenges in persisting toward their masters and doctoral degrees. While this population may be more advanced academically, their personal challenges may pose the greatest threat to their persistence and success. Most graduate student advising takes place at the faculty level within departments, and these sessions often focus on coursework and professional goals. Given faculty members' many responsibilities, they may have little time to address other issues. This session will describe a supplemental advising model offered through a student affairs division which addresses issues that may hinder academic success. Participants will leave with an understanding of the challenges unique to graduate students, ideas for addressing these challenges, and resources to engage within their home institutions.
