Abstract:
|
Been there, done that! We all have life experiences that can benefit our students but when is sharing our stories appropriate? What and how much should we tell? The answer should be obvious but often is not. Stories can build connections and rapport or undermine the relationships we have with students. While self-disclosure has been well researched in other helping fields, this process is rarely discussed in relation to academic advising though it is greatly applicable. This interactive workshop explores self-disclosure, its impact on the advising relationship, and how self-disclosure can be a powerful tool. Participants will develop an understanding of the self-disclosure process, their own self-disclosure style, and learn when and how to share personal stories effectively. |
