Title: "A Parent Would Like to Speak with You": Addressing Parent Concerns and Encouraging Student Engagement in First Year Advising
Lead Presenter: Candyce Hill
Date: October 02, 2018    Time: 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Room: N 122 A/B
Abstract: What if you could turn your next interaction with parents into a valuable opportunity for you to both address parents' needs and encourage a student to be more engaged in their academic advising experiences? Many interactions between advisors and parents also involve the students themselves. During these interactions advisors have a chance to go beyond directly answering parent questions and move to a point where they are encouraging students to be active participants in the advising conversation. This session will focus on working with first year college students, common concerns expressed by parents during different points of the academic year, and tools advisors can use to answer parent questions while encouraging student engagement.
