Abstract:
|
An old Jewish saying says, 'What's truer than truth? The Story.' In Exploratory advising, advisors spend much of their time trying to widen students' perspectives on opportunities that could unfold for them if they actively engage in authentic experiences. However, saying this alone and even presenting statistics is not nearly as effective as sharing stories, as students need concrete, specific examples to make meaningful connections. This interactive session will explore the significance of storytelling in advising practices, present existing theory and frameworks and apply it towards advising undecided students. Given a student scenario, attendees will then recall and discuss stories and storytelling delivery methods that incorporate self-authorship, and become inspired to fill up their treasure chest of stories to share with students. |
