Title: Making Academic Coaching Great: A Panel Discussion About the Training Needs of Academic Coaches
Lead Presenter: Christopher Pisarik
Date: October 03, 2018    Time: 10:30 am - 11:30 am
Room: N 126 A/B
Abstract: Academic coaching programs have proliferated in higher education during the last two decades. Despite its potential effectiveness this service has not been studied with empirical depth. One of the few peer-reviewed studies published on academic coaching reports frustration by academic coaches as a result of limited training opportunities (Sepulveda, 2017). This parallels a nationwide survey suggesting that many individuals who hold positions as academic coaches do not have formalized training in coaching (Robinson, 2015). Currently there are no standards of training or training infrastructures for individuals who currently coach students in academic settings. This panel of professionals from diverse backgrounds in higher education will guide participants in a discussion about current and future training needs of academic coaches. We will also discuss training and coaching certification opportunities for coaches in higher education.
