Abstract:
|
The initial advising meeting is a huge step for adult students and an opportunity for the advisor to discover as much about the new student as possible within the time constraints of an advising appointment. Advisors strive to build relationships that go much deeper than just handing students a class schedule. Using the journalistic method of the 5W's (who, what, when, where, and why) is the most effective way to get the student's personal, authentic "story". This session will demonstrate how to utilize the method and why it works well with adult students, and any non-traditional student demographic. The session will include mock advisor/advisee meetings, examples of student "stories" and guidelines for how to frame the 5 W questions. Come to this session to get the full scoop! |
