Title: Is This Just Abbreviated Mental Health Counseling or Sexy Advising?: An In-Depth Examination of Success Coaching at the Community College
Lead Presenter: Jessica Robinson
Date: October 01, 2018    Time: 7:15 am - 8:15 am
Room: N Ballroom 120 A-D
Abstract: While academic coaching programs have multiplied in the past twenty years in higher education, the empirical literature examining these services, though small, almost exclusively assumes the four-year university as its context. Since coaching continues to grow at community colleges, further research is needed to assess its' distinctions and potential effectiveness in this unique academic setting. Therefore, in this poster presentation, titled, 'Is This Just Abbreviated Mental Health Counseling or Sexy Advising?: A Qualitative Exploration of Success Coaching at the Community College', the presenter will display a graphic model of the goals, responsibilities, and student outcomes gathered from qualitative interviews with 40 different community college success coaches. Participants will emerge with a more nuanced understanding of community college success coaching programs, especially when compared to academic advising and mental health counseling services in this same context.
