Abstract:
|
Mental health practitioners have long recognized the benefits of using judicious personal self-disclosure of their own experiences to build trust and empathy with clients. Academic advisors can employ the same techniques to help students feel more comfortable being forthright, thus creating more helpful conversation outcomes. With self-disclosure, advisor personality and differing fundamental understandings of our profession intersect with technique and style. In this session, we will discuss varying comfort levels with advisor self-disclosure; what kinds of personal information are appropriate to share with students; best practices; and results from a related survey of academic advisors. |
