Serving those who have served: Strategies to help non-Veterans effectively advise student Veterans
Years of active U.S. military engagement have resulted in an influx of Veterans returning to civilian life and our campuses, but most advisors are not veterans and may struggle to reach and understand this student population. This session will help you improve your military cultural competency to develop more effective and trusting student-advisor relationships and better support servicemembers on campus. Attendees will gain 1) greater familiarity with the varied Veteran and Military populations and their educational benefits, 2) an understanding of some common military language and terms to enhance advising conversations, 3)advising strategies and formats for working more effectively with Veteran students. The presentation is best for new advisors and those interested in new advising tools to serve a growing student population. |
