Title: Assessing Advising Outcomes Beyond Satisfaction: A Collaborative Approach

Abstract: "Academic advising is commonly cited as an interaction critical to college students' retention and on-time graduation. Despite implied connections between advising and timely degree completion, no studies have clearly linked the frequency and quality of advising to the aforementioned student outcomes. Assessments of academic advising are usually limited to students' satisfaction with their advising experience. This presentation provides insights into a collaborative process in a large research university to explore the benefits of academic advising from existing campus-wide assessments. Through the analyses, the team found that meeting with academic advisors is positively associated with timely degree completion and other student engagement measures. The approach can be applied in other settings to strengthen capacity for assessing the effectiveness of advising and support data-based decision making.
