Abstract:
|
Academic advising has an established role on most colleges and universities. College success coaching has emerged recently as an additional support service, which may serve some of the same functions as advising. This presentation shares findings of a narrative study exploring the similarities and differences of academic advising and coaching as described by individuals in these roles. Focus groups were held at the 2017 national NACADA conference. Findings will be presented in how the roles overlap, how they are distinct, what contexts these roles depend on, and underlying tensions. Clarity about the academic advisors and academic coaches roles is needed before scholars can assess the effectiveness of coaching on a larger and national scale. This project was funded by a NACADA research grant. |
