Abstract:
|
It is essential that advisors have an understanding of development, psychosocial, cultural, student and group identity theories, in order to appreciate how each student's life story influences the student's overall evolution and success in higher education. The purpose of this session is to sensitize advisors to their own internal biases, URS barriers, and teach best- practices associated with advising underrepresented students, which directly aligns with NACADA Core Competencies (2017).
The presentation includes an extensive literature review (Astin; Baxter-Magolda; Chickering, Patton et al., etc.) resource packet, student video vignettes and interviews from a diverse group of administrative and advising professionals, representative of regional, private, and public institutions types. |
