Abstract:
|
"The number of enrolled international students in American institutions of higher education has reached 1,078,822 in 2017, consisting 5.3% of the overall American college population. ([IIE], 2017). University staff and faculty, including advisors, engage with international students at varying levels. However, intercultural competency development requires resources and concerted efforts.
This presentation describes the collective experience of international student advisors from a unique educational institution seeking to discover - Is it Individual or Cultural? The session will explore how the understanding of the international first-year journey is essential for advisors and enables staff to understand students in a holistic way. Individual advisors' stories of inquiry-based developmental advising, adolescent development theory, and development of intercultural sensitivity will also be reviewed.
