Title: Sharing Life Stories to Keep Army ROTC Cadets on Azimuth: Exploring How ROTC Instructors Use Narrative When Advising
Lead Presenter: Kerry Charron
Date: October 03, 2018    Time: 10:30 am - 11:30 am
Room: N 131 B/C
Abstract: This presentation will highlight Army ROTC instructors' use of life stories when advising cadets. Interviews of eight cadre members will be analyzed using the theoretical perspective of narrative theory (Bruner, 1987). The purpose is to determine in what ways ROTC cadre members draw on their pivotal life moments to mentor and guide cadets during their college years and in preparation for military careers. Presentation objectives include the following: understanding how narrative advising can be an effective tool for working with specific student populations; examining the value of using life stories as a professional development topic for ROTC programs and broader advisor populations; and exploring ways in which narrative advising can increase student engagement and build advisor/advisee rapport.
