Session #: 188(LEC)
Title: What's the Story?: Advisors as Holders of Stories
Lead Presenter: Anna Zischkau
Date: October 02, 2018    Time: 11:15 am - 12:15 pm
Room: N 231 C
Abstract: "Are you a teller of tales, a lover of legends or lore, or just drawn to a good story? If so, this session is for you! Taking the belief that advising is storied work as its operational principle, presenters delve into the question: 'How can advisors be responsive to students' stories without collapsing the stories themselves into dominant narrative structures?'

During the session, participants will become acquainted with pertinent historical and theoretical developments of narratives; engage in reflective exercises that emphasize listening practices; and experiment with ways of recording students' stories based in audience-driven awareness. Contributing to conversations across humanities and advising disciplines, this interactive session challenges existing research on narrative advising by introducing participants to alternative story-telling practices.
