Abstract:
|
Many fields, such as health and law, have common academic preparations for all practitioners. The workforce within the field of academic advising draws from a host of academic backgrounds. Although this diversity is beneficial in many ways, it poses challenges to the professionalization of our field: how do advisors come to the field of academic advising? Once they are here, how are they socialized into the profession? How do emotions and personal dispositions contribute to our work as advisors? Despite the increasing professionalization of the field, advisors are not studied in our literature. In this collaborative autoethnographic project, three advisors have reflected and analyzed their stories over the past four years. Findings indicated that emotions, attitudes and mindset played a significant role in our socialization to the field. |
