Abstract:
|
"This presentation will feature a case study of graduate students in a higher education administration internship course analyzed through a narrative theory lens (Bruner, 1987). The study's purpose is to explore sharing narratives as a key component of a practicum course. Students inquire about the instructor's career narrative when seeking guidance about the internship experience or future careers, and students write a final reflection ""internship narrative"" synthesizing their experiences. The pedagogical approach can be characterized as a blend of subject-matter teaching and career advising. The main objective is to explore ways in which an instructor can capitalize on ""advising as teaching"" (Campbell & Nutt, 2008) in the form of sharing life stories to engage students in deeper subject matter learning and career contemplation.
