Abstract:
|
How many times have advisors heard when working with students, 'I'm not a Math person' or 'I'm not an English person because I cannot write papers'? How do advisors typically respond to these statements? Some common responses are: utilize the tutoring center, the writing center and speak with professors. While these are typically good tips, how else can advisors support students while also contributing to their development? A potential answer to this question is to integrate a newer theory into advising, Growth Mindset. As advisors, we utilize physiological, career, and identity based theories to promote student success, however there isn't much literature on Growth Mindset and academic advising. Using Lowenstein's (2005) advising as teaching framework, the presenters will review how academic advisors can integrate Growth Mindset into their practices in order to promote student learning. |
