Title: If You Build It, Will They Come? Bringing Liberal Arts Academics into the Fold
Lead Presenter: Audran Downing
Date: October 01, 2018    Time: 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
Room: N 131 B/C
Abstract: "It has long been thought that in liberal arts classrooms academics are INSIDE the classroom, and career planning is OUTSIDE the classroom. Unfortunately, given cost concerns, both students and their parents are increasingly looking for a return on investment in ways that they have not before. ""Learning for learning's sake"" doesn't resonate today the way it used to. A new initiative of the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Maryland focuses increased attention on career-readiness as integral to the student's academic, in-class experience, instead of as separate and apart from it. This session will examine the development of the various options for connecting classroom with careers, and explore the benefits and challenges of creating academic partnerships.
