Title: When Advising Meets Counseling: How to Ensure Students Receive the Most Appropriate Care
Lead Presenter: Natasha Bellefeuille
Date: October 02, 2018    Time: 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Room: N 229 A/B
Abstract: Academic Advisors offer resources that are an accessible and natural part of the student experience. As students become more comfortable with their advisor, the conversations may shift from academics to personal concerns, even touching on mental health and topics normally reserved for counselors. This presentation aims to teach its audience basic counseling and interpersonal skills that can be utilized when working with students in distress. In addition, strategies for effective referrals relating to mental health and wellbeing will be discussed. Further, the newly developed Wellness Liaison position housed in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities will be explained. Self-care for methods for staff who work with students in difficult difficult situations will be discussed and shared.
