Title: The Art of the Referral: Advising Beyond a Major
Lead Presenter: Matthew O'Brien
Date: October 03, 2018    Time: 10:30 am - 11:30 am
Room: N 132 B/C
Abstract: Not all advising is about degrees. Sometimes our jobs require navigating the campus community with students. Referrals are tough for advisors who are problem solvers. Sorting out the entire campus is too much for one teenager to handle. In this session, we will discuss how to mitigate the confusion, cut the red tape, and make sense of all of the partners that go into a single student's story. We will also discuss bringing institutional positivity and commitment into these interactions, while empowering our students to take informed action. We will also develop ongoing training to use at your office. As an Honors Advisor, I don't advise majors, but I do help create an academic story. Using our best practices and tools, I want to help everyone find new ways to make impactful referrals.
