Title: Using Facebook to Tap into the Power of Families to Support Students
Lead Presenter: Lynn O'Sickey
Date: October 02, 2018    Time: 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Room: N 121 C
Abstract: Want new ways to support students and connect them to critical and helpful information? Facebook groups for the family members of our students have helped us: 1) explain the 'why' behind many aspects of a college education (defusing concerns and frustrations), 2) correct misinformation shared among students and families, 3) connect students to resources they need, and 4) intervene in individual situations to provide support. Significantly, we have found that family members frequently share our information with their students and help direct students to our resources.

This session is designed to provide you with a toolkit for creating Family Facebook groups. We'll cover how to get started, time investment, what has been effective, and unintended consequences, both positive and negative.
