Title: "I Have Something to Offer Too!" Utilizing Cultural Capital in At-Risk Students
Lead Presenter: Rachel Moody
Date: October 02, 2018    Time: 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm
Room: N 121 A/B
Abstract: Scholars are increasingly promoting strengths-based advising as a means to help students harness their potential, rather than accept themselves as 'damaged goods,' in need of remediation. This presentation attempts to take the strengths-based movement further, proposing that advisors recognize the strengths of students' social and cultural capital; critically examining the values and norms typically ascribed to student success. Academic advisors, in partnership with their non-advising colleagues, can help students to use their networks to create academic communities of persistence. This work will require advisors to be creative, collaborative, and, active in confronting their own biases. There will be several examples of how to translate these complex ideas into actionable steps.
