Abstract:
|
In today's results-driven society, students entering the realm of higher education are feeling pressure from parents, teachers, coaches and peers to have a plan for the future (Shaffer & Zalewski, 2011). These external factors often cause students to latch onto a career without much exploration or research on what that occupation actually entails and what their chances of making it in the field are (Erikson, 1956; Marcia, 1966). We call this phenomenon, foreclosure, and it is plaguing today's students now more than ever. These identity and career foreclosures appear in a variety of student populations including student-athletes and pre-professional hopefuls. This program will: outline techniques on how to have these tough discussions with students, allow for group discussion on strategies for foreclosed students, and present potential policy implementation for engaging with these students earlier. |
