Title: Not All Stories Have a Happy Ending: Being Comfortable in Difficult Conversations
Lead Presenter: Margaret Hammond
Date: October 01, 2018    Time: 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm
Room: N 131 B/C
Abstract: When a large, multi-campus, research institution implements a new academic progress policy, academic advisers rise to the challenge to develop an intervention strategy that can help re-write the story for Liberal Arts students who are in Academic Warning. A brief review of the institutional academic policy is included to provide context and background. Selected elements of motivational interviewing (MI), goal-setting strategies, along with a data analysis will be shared to show the extent to which the advising intervention strategy was effective and to show areas of improvement. Through sharing and discussion on ways attendees have engaged students who are in academic danger, we will leave with new strategies to turn unhappy stories into tales of academic success.
