Title: The Story of This Advisor's Education
Lead Presenter: Marc Lowenstein
Date: October 01, 2018    Time: 10:15 am - 11:15 am
Room: N 226 C
Abstract: In his new book 'The Power of Story: Narrative Theory in Academic Advising,' Peter Hagen introduces as a key concept 'the story of this student's education.' This presentation proposes that one way advisors can learn to help students articulate their stories is for advisors to reflect on the 'story' of their own education. After explaining this concept, the presenter will describe how he undertook that reflective process and how he later made use of the results in an advising role and as a stimulus for scholarship. Participants will have an opportunity to compare the 'stories of their education' and consider how they can draw on these to help students author their own narratives. This program is a case study in how humanities scholarship can illuminate advising.
