Lead Presenter: Shannon Williams
Date: October 01, 2018    Time: 7:15 am - 8:15 am
Room: N Ballroom 120 A-D
Abstract: Colleges and universities in the United States struggle to retain and graduate Black men who enter institutions of higher education (Harper, 2006a, 2006c; Strayhorn, 2008). Data from the U.S. Department of Education (2006) indicated that 67.6 percent of Black men who enroll in institutions of higher education leave before they complete their degrees. This study explored Black fathers' influences on their sons' well-being, college retention, and graduation goals; through the lived experiences of the sons. An expanded understanding of the influences of Black fathers on their sons allow more informed decisions by families, communities, P-12 schools, and colleges and universities affecting Black men's preparation and enrollment at higher education institutions.
