Abstract:
|
Arriving at a U.S. campus can be challenging for late arriving students. Culture shock often diminishes the new student experience and creates anxiety. Interactions at International Student and August-Arrival Orientation become transactional and rarely allow advisers to establish meaningful relationships. In collaboration with key stakeholders, an online, pre-arrival module was developed to help address these challenges.
In this presentation advisors will learn (1) how culture shock affects students, (2) how a large, 4-year institution developed an innovative pre-arrival module to teach late arriving students about the academic structure and academic requirements of the university , and to allow these students to pre-schedule essential courses, (3) the value of strategic partnerships in the development process, (4) best practices based on our initial assessment. |
