Title: Advising STEM Students When You're a Stranger to STEM
Lead Presenter: Elaine Lewis
Date: October 01, 2018    Time: 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Room: N 226 C
Abstract: "Sedimentology, pathogenic bacteriology, cytogenetics, neuroeconomics...How do you advise a student to enroll in these courses when you have no idea what these words even mean? In the Fall of 2017, two advisors, entering the world of STEM advising for the first time, started asking themselves this question. The presenters will share how they linked their natural skills of inquiry and existing knowledge of advising strategies to create a meaningful and successful academic advising experience for their new students.
