Abstract:
|
First Generation students have barriers to overcome before they make it to campus, and many continue to struggle with the transition to campus once they are admitted due to imposter syndrome. Using my life story as a timeline and reference in the life of a First-Gen student, we will explore some of the identity issues, challenges and unique characteristics for those who identify as the first in their family to go to college. Key takeaways discussed will include: gaining family support, deficit mindset, hidden curriculum, AIM program model, involvement, survivor's guilt and transition to campus etc. At the end of this session I will equip advisors of any background to understand and advocate for their First Generation students' success, and provide postcards with key takeaways for future reference as current Higher Ed professionals. |
