Connecting First Generation Students to College Culture: Perspectives of First Generation Advisors
Much is known about characteristics and challenges of first generation students (Bui, 2005; Terenzini et al., 1996) and strategies to help first generation students set themselves up for academic success (Demetriou & Mann, 2012); however, little is known about backgrounds and experiences of academic advisors whom interact with these students on a regular basis (Mead, 2012). The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences that academic advisors have with first generation students, which in turn, guide the questions and conversations we have with these students. Some individuals are exposed to social and cultural experiences that foreshadow academic journeys whereas others are not. Therefore, this transference of information may help first generation students learn the culture and policies of higher education. |
