Abstract:
|
In today's climate, apprehension arises as students of color navigate college life at predominantly white institutions. As black academic advisors and practitioners who have experienced racial or bias discomfort in college, the role unofficially becomes that of a nurturer (parent, sibling, etc.) to so many young black students on campus who believe "representation is everything". Through three departments on campus, Kennesaw State aims to alleviate those tensions by collaborating and providing co-curricular opportunities to its students. Using Intrusive Advising, Schlossberg's Transition Theory and Critical Race Theory, we seek to show others how important collaboration is across campus while helping students embrace their identities to take advantage of the resources on campus. Articles by Rosemary Closson and Grizelda MacDonald influenced our mindset for providing collaborative spaces on our campus. |
