Title: Assisting Transfer Students Using a Dual Lens Approach of Appreciative Advising and Transition Theory
Lead Presenter: Tony Lazarowicz
Date: October 02, 2018    Time: 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Room: N 225 A/B
Abstract: Recent research confirms that the majority of today's college students are mobile, often attending multiple institutions before earning their bachelor's degree. Because they are likely to encounter significant credit and program-related obstacles, academic advisors are uniquely positioned to positively influence transfer student success. Advising must be grounded in theory, so this session will unpack a distinct model that melds the 6-Phase framework of Appreciative Advising with the 4-S coping mechanisms outlined in Schlossberg's Transition Theory. Using this approach, advisors can help their transfer advisees identify the positive aspects of their transition and empower them to take charge of their transfer experience. Participants will leave with a toolbox of positive yet targeted questions that are applicable regardless of your home institution type.
