Abstract:
|
Though many institutions of higher education emphasize a liberal education, students tend to see general education requirements as an obstacle that prevents them from taking their major courses and persisting through higher education. In addition to hearing national pushback against liberal education, students often are not able to connect what they are gaining in their general education courses to the bigger picture of their undergraduate curriculum. As advisors, we have an opportunity to help students move away from seeing general education courses as discrete blocks, and instead towards understanding how these blocks fit into the foundation and integrated structure of their entire education. This session will discuss and develop ways in which storytelling can be used in advising to create opportunities for meaning-making between and within these courses, and get a better understanding of the key roles advisors play in integrative learning. |
