Abstract:
|
Responding to Puroway's (2016) article 'Critical Advising: A Freirian-Inspired Approach,' Winham (2017) argued that academic advisors are inappropriate resources for students to discuss the political environment we live in today and its impact on students' experiences within higher education. How, then, can students express themselves regarding the discrimination and injustices they encounter, when those barriers are often the contributing factors to academic difficulty and sense of belonging? This session aims to take conversations on social justice issues to a deeper level particularly for practitioners who are White and/or of privileged backgrounds. Without a willingness to engage in these critical reflections about ourselves and the profession, we will not be able to understand how we can work towards being allies for our students and hear their lived experiences. |
