Abstract:
|
"Student-athletes who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ) often feel stigmatized and alone, with little support from family, team-mates, coaches, and other university stakeholders. Although media coverage of LGBTQ athletes is increasingly prevalent in society, these issues are often not discussed in athletic departments at institutions of higher education. Many people deem sexual orientation to be a private matter, but a student-athlete's inability to be open about who they are poses serious harm to their emotional and psychological well-being as well as their athletic performance. Our field literature has addressed considerations for advising student-athletes and LGBTQ students, but little has addressed the cross-section of these populations. The purpose of this hot topics session is to discuss the challenges and experiences of LGBTQ student-athletes and how academic advisors can assist and support them.
