Presentation Info and Handouts
  Code=798
Conference Year: 2018
Session #: 338(LEC)
Title: HOT TOPIC: What's In a Name: Does Liberal Arts Need Another Name?
Lead Presenter: Vicente Hernandez
Date: October 03, 2018    Time: 10:30 am - 11:30 am
Room: N 225 A/B
Abstract: In 2017, Brandon Busteed wrote an opinion piece tilted 'Higher Education: Drop the Term 'Liberal Arts'' (August 2017). Busteed argued that if higher education was willing to rename Liberal Arts, it could help 'turn the tide on waning public support for higher education' because in his view, it is time to 'disconnect the strong value undergirding the liberal arts from the weak words that define them'. In this Hot Topic session, we will discuss if the name 'Liberal Arts' presents a unique challenge to advisors in this field of higher education and if so, how it can be overcome. We welcome all advisors to share their thoughts in this open-ended discussion session.
