Abstract:
|
"What does it mean to be 'smart?' Many students are granted this label at a young age by parents and teachers without much understanding of the impact. Eventually, these students enter college with expectations that they will continue to achieve. However, the first-year of college is a time of intense change-new peers, new requirements, new standards for success. For previously labeled students, this transition can raise questions about how 'smart' one really is. Who among these students is intimidated by such experiences, who prevails, who thrives, and why? Through the stories of 5 students, I will present the implications of being 'smart' on the experiences, motivation, and well-being among students in the first year of college, and provide advisors a deeper understanding and practical advising solutions to best serve these students.
