Abstract:
|
"This presentation presents the results from 49 semi-structured interviews that explored how academic advisors socialize undergraduate students seeking to pursue graduate degrees. Guided by Weidman, Twale and Stein's '2001' model of graduate student socialization, this study explored how these institutional agents expose students to the attitudinal, behavioral and cognitive expectations required for graduate education. Previous studies have identified an empirical relationship between faculty-student interaction and graduate school aspiration, yet little is known how faculty advisors introduce graduate education to prospective students. Outcomes from this presentation will elucidate ways in which faculty advisors socialize prospective graduate students to disciplinary knowledge, specific coursework, and important skillsets and values. Study results advance the emerging body of scholarly literature about graduate school aspiration, choice, and socialization.
